The Perlan Project is a scientific endeavor to research atmospheric phenomena including:
1. The structure of stratospheric mountain waves (SMW),
2. Breaking waves (possibly),
3. The tropopause and the changes in its structure during SMW activity
4. The interaction among the Polar Vortex, the tropopause, and SMW activity
New Zealand and Sweden were chosen as the field locaations for phase 1 of the project. During the active phase of the Polar Vortex because active stratospheric mountain waves (SMW’s) have been documented in these locations. Further research will include investigation on the ozone and its dissapation in these regions. The attainment of a world altitude record will be one outcome of this research project.
